Blockchain to Claim-process in Ocean Cargo Insurance

A joint proof of concept that seeks to increase the efficiency of claims processes through a Blockchain-based insurance payment solution.
01

CLIENT NEEDS

Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. (TMNF) had been facing different challenges in the marine cargo insurance claim process. For example, the fact that the duration of the entire process could take up to 1 month or more or that the process involved complex tasks in the preparation and presentation of documents.

02

OUR SOLUTION

From November 2017 to August 2018, TMNF, in cooperation with NTT DATA Corporation(NTT DATA), conducted a PoC to apply Blockchain technology to the claim process.

TMNF and NTT DATA verified that data used in actual insurance claims payment operations, such as accident reports, damaged cargo photos, and invoices, could be quickly shared with eight overseas claim agencies and appraisers for use in the insurance claim payment process by distributing them on a Blockchain.

03

RESULTS / BENEFITS

This PoC demonstrated that the use of Blockchain for claims could bring benefits such as an increase in efficiency, reducing the time of the claim process from 1 month to 1 week.

Likewise, there was also a reduction in the workload for claims operations by digitizing the required documents and sharing them on a Blockchain
